All The Rest - Straight Up

There are a few different kinds of landscapers out there right now. For example:
  1. Timmy

Timmy is the kid in your neighborhood who lives down the street. Timmy is the cute little boy who you've watched grow up in the neighborhood. He's known as the boy who knocks on doors and passes out flyers offering grass cutting at $30 a cut. You want to help a boy make money, and you feel bad turning him down. Only problem: Timmy doesn't have $12,000 lawn mowers that cut beautiful lines like you see on a baseball diamond. Also, just like you and I did, Timmy likes to play!! You may not see him on a consistent basis - and if you wait on him, you may get a letter from the HOA formally requesting you to get a bushwhacker out ASAP. Timmy is just the right guy for some people. There is someone for everyone.

  2. The part-timer or "off-the-books"guy

You have tapped into the network! These guys sneak away from their regular jobs on the weekends. They work for a landscaping company and have a couple side jobs. They come in a little old truck and do a really fast job! They charge really cheep, too! Only problem: These guys sometimes come on Sundays. They don't understand don't scalp the hill and trim along the fence. They accept cash only. These guys are a little sketchy.

  3. So-and-so Landscaping

So-and-so is a young company - a recent start-up. It's either a one man show or a couple guys. So-and-so starts off great! Unbelievably cheep, there's pride in their work, decently clean people and equipment, and a good product! Almost too good to be true! Plus, you feel like a Good Samaritan for helping out a new young company! Only problem: Something starts to change. Suddenly nobody is answering or returning phone calls at So-and-so Landscaping. Suddenly the work quality begins to deteriorate. The trucks are always dirty now. The workers are becoming hurried and sloppy. On top of that, their prices are going UP! It makes no sense! You are frustrated. What the heck happened!? Where is our landscaper? Just call me back! What happened was So-and-so got lots of referrals because he was so cheap and his work wasn't too bad. So-and-so liked landscaping but never learned about business. So-and-so got so many calls his "system" of writing down numbers on scraps of paper started to fail! He lost more names and numbers than he ever wrote! He found himself becoming the all-in-one guy; the estimator, the designer, the accounts payable and accounts receivable guy (what's that?!), the phone answer man, AND the laborer! Talk about juggling! Do an estimate and then run back to the job! So-and-so is stressed out. So-and-so is about to crumble under the weight. So-and-so just wants to hide its face, and hide from you. So he doesn't pick up the phone. The systems were never in place to handle the calls. and So-and-so doesn't even know anything about systems. Even if the systems were put in place, So-and-so can't afford to utilize them because it was never in the budget.
